Those of you who know me on a personal level, are aware that I have been taking college classes off and on since 2005. I have studied a large range of courses, changing my major more times than I can count. I’ve had intentions of getting a degree in Social Work, Nursing, Medical Assisting, Radiography… the list goes on and on. So as you can imagine, I have a whole lot of credits, that go towards a whole lot of nothing.
With that being said, I took the last couple of years off to really think about what I could see myself doing for the rest of my life. (I’m 30 and still have no idea what I want to do.. how do they expect an 18 year old right out of high school to??) My original plan was to do something in the medical field, though I didn’t know what. Now that I have worked in healthcare for the last 7+ years, I know FOR SURE that is NOT what I want to do. At all. (Can’t I just play with dogs and cats for a living??) As it turns out, I figured out what I love, and what I want to go back to school for with out even meaning to. And this blog is what I have to thank for it.
I have ALWAYS loved to write. Especially if I am able to choose a topic I am passionate about. It’s easy to lose that spark of creativity when you’re being forced to write about poems you don’t like, books you don’t understand, or subjects you just have zero interest in. This blog has reminded me how much I truly do enjoy it when given the freedom. It gives you a chance to create new ideas, and to display it in a way that completely compliments your personality. Aside from writing, I genuinely enjoy planning and crafting new things. I have always loved being assigned to projects where I was able to design something. Fundraiser promotions, for example, is a blast. Finding a career that would allow me to be innovative like this, where I can display my hard work would be like, well, not work at all.
Lo and behold, there is a degree that would encourage me to do all of the above listed, and I never even considered it before starting The Cyster Story. As of January 16th, I will officially be a student, working towards a degree in Communications and New Media. For those of you that are unsure what this degree entails, an example of a career outcome could be working for a news station, writing for newspapers, creating websites, marketing. The opportunities are endless!
I am so looking forward to this new journey! And who knows, maybe someday I really will be able to work from home, and hang out with my dogs and cat all day.
